A ‘new year’ gives us an opportunity to welcome retreatants to Glanaulin. We started with Year 12 pupils from Aquinas who used spirals to develop an awareness of their strengths and qualities and what gives them resilience. ‘Be strong and courageous do not tremble or be dismayed for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go’ (Joshua 1: 9).
They were followed by their fellow Year 14 students, a year in which plans are made and decisions taken. Retreat for these Year 14s was to take a step back from the books to ask each, what speaks to their heart. They do this to capture their imagination and inspire feelings of care and gladness. ‘Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it’ (Proverbs 4: 23).
Our near neighbours came next, St Mary’s CBGS newest recruits, Year 8s. Boys finding new friends and meeting up with older ones, telling us tales of walking up the hill, checking their timetables and getting up earlier! The boys got to know the qualities which they hold themselves and what to look for in a friend. ‘Sweet friendships refresh the soul and awake our hearts with joy’ (Proverbs 27: 9).
